Curtis Freiler and his brother-in-law, Jerry Fels founded Artisan House in California in 1963 to sell their distinctive metal art and make "gallery-quality art for the masses". Fels, as head designer, and Freiler, as production chief, led a team that grew to 300 artisans and included many immigrants and workers with disabilities.
