1960s Modernist Resin Lucite sculpture of figure with baby on wood base, circa 1960-1965, by noted Los Angeles artist Katherine Kadell (1915-2005 Los Angeles, CA).  Produced in a style that the artist referred to as reminiscent of “Lalique” glass art.  Signed in the sculpture and under base.  Kadell produced several of these small pieces of mother and child in different materials and tones, each in its own way deeply evocative of themes humanistic, philosphical and even religious, depending on the viewer of the piece and their perspective.

Dimensions:  4 in. wide x 3 in. deep x 4.75in high.  Excellent vintage condition, may exhibit minor wear.   Provenance:  From the estate of Katherine Kadell.

Born in Vienna, an accomplished artist, sculptor, painter and print maker, Kadell studied at Chicago Art Institute, Otis Art Institute and UCLA, and taught sculpture at the University of Judaism. Member of Artists Equity Association, Women Painters West, Beverly Hills Art League, and Los Angeles Art Association. Longtime member of Plato Society of UCLA.

Kadell was one of a generation of midcentury women artists whose work was overlooked or diminished by the then male-dominated world of art and art criticism.  On Katherine Kadell's show at the Paideira Gallery, Los Angeles: “Her sculptures are modest in size.  Such immaterial feelings as nostalgia or contemplation are pleasantly clear…  exhibits unpaid debts to Barlach, Rodin, Degas and others.”  (Critic William Wilson, Art Forum, November 1964).
